Art

Art is about making decisions, solving problems creatively and learning to interpret the world around us. In the modern world there is an increasing demand for creativity. Art lessons help to nurture this vital quality, as young artists our students regularly produce pieces of work that are entirely unique.

We learn a range of technical and analytical skills, exploring Art through a wide range of different themes and using an array of different approaches. We will work in 2D and 3D, from drawing and painting through to printing, sculpting with clay, modelling with willow and exploring digital art. We continue to foster excellent partnerships with some of the many professional artists who work in Hackney, and are regularly involved in collaborative projects with creative professionals.

KEY STAGE 3

In Years 7 to 9 we explore art through a range of different avenues; from Egyptian art and African art through to Modern art, comic illustration and architectural drawing. Observational drawing forms an integral part of the course at key stage 3, and it is from this initial starting point that students move on and begin exploring the exciting world of Art, learning a wide variety of skills and exploring a range of different approaches.

KEY STAGE 4

What will I learn?

You will build your research skills by looking at the work of Textile Artists and Fashion Designers. Build your confidence and ability to generate and communicate creative ideas. Explore a wide range of creative skills and specialist textile techniques such as machine sewing, embroidery, printing etc. You will also learn how to measure, pattern cut and construct a garment.

How will I learn?

You will complete a number of projects and will be required to think independently, creating a personal response for each project. You will be prepared to experiment and explore the different possibilities within textiles, using a range of materials and specialist equipment. Coursework will be completed on A3 sheets and mounted for exhibition, along with textile pieces and a garment which will also be displayed.

How will I be assessed?

  • There are two units of course work which make up 60% of the mark
  • One unit will be completed in Y10 and one in Y11
  • There will be one final practical exam in year 11
  • The practical exam makes up 40% of your overall mark

What can I do next?

This course will provide a good foundation for further study at A Level/BTEC. You will build a good portfolio of practical work. Further down the line many students have chosen to study a related area at university. The course would also  be useful for pursuing a career in art and design, including fashion design, interior design, textile design, costume design, theatre design, fashion journalism or working in any creative based industry.

Skills for success

This is an option for students with an interest in Textile art and design. You do not need any previous knowledge of Textiles but an interest in Fashion and Textiles would be ideal. A good grasp of art would be desirable. If you have an eye for detail, an interest in fashion/clothing/costume and you have good organisational skills, this would be an advantage.
