Course: BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate

According to research carried out by Sport England, sport is one of the top 15 industries in England, employing over 400,000 people and offering many career opportunities in a range of areas including fitness training, coaching, teaching and sports science.

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport is aimed at students who want to continue their education through applied learning, and who want to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment, possibly within the sport sector.

This qualification is equivalent to one A Level. Students wishing to take this BTEC must have passed 5 GCSEs in different subjects at grade C or higher with grade C or higher in GCSE PE or Merit/Distinction in BTEC Sport. Candidates must take a fitness test before a place on the course is confirmed.

The course has been developed with the help of academics, employers and professional sporting bodies to ensure that it supports students' progression to higher education or employment directly in the sport sector.

Students taking this qualification will study three mandatory units:

  • Anatomy and Physiology (1.5 hour external written exam)
  • Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being (written task set completed under supervised conditions and marked by Pearson)
  • Professional Development in the Sport Industry (internally marked assignment based work)

Students will also choose from a range of option units, designed to support their progression to sport-based courses at university or employment within the sport industry. They are all assessed by internally marked assignment based work and cover areas such as:

  • application of fitness testing
  • sport psychology
  • practical sports performance
  • sports leadership.

Students will develop skills that are highly regarded by both universities and employers, including team working, leadership, performance analysis, resilience, evaluation, analysis and synthesising concepts. Completion of this qualification will enable students to meet the admission requirements for many university courses.
