The Urswick School hosts Hackney Sugar Smart launch

The Urswick School was very pleased to host the Hackney launch of the Sugar Smart programme on Wednesday 29th November. SUGAR SMART Hackney was launched by Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Devolution. The campaign is part of a national initiative which aims to educate and help people to reduce their excessive intake of sugar consumption which can lead to obesity and diabetes in adults and children.

The Urswick School have signed up to be part of this important project and we were chosen as the venue for the Hackney launch because of our existing good practice in this area.  As you know, The Urswick School is only secondary school in the country that provides free school meals to all students.  We do this as we recognise the importance of school food not only for health, but also to help achieve high educational achievement.  We have also banned all soft drinks, sweets and confectionery, to reduce excessive sugar consumption.

Year 8 students from The Urswick are taking the lead in Sugar Smart and have been learning about the significant effects of sugar on health and fitness in their PE Health and Wellbeing lessons.  A group of Year 8 students represented the school at the launch and shared with the invited guests their pledges.  Some of these students are also taking part in 3 workshops at the end of term to become Sugar Smart Ambassadors –developing a campaign and promotional materials to deliver to their peers.
