Open Evening 2018 - Executive Headteacher's Address

This is an edited version of a speech given by Mr Brown at our Year 5 and 6 Open Evening on 04/10/18.

I am pleased to welcome you to The Urswick School, but the most important part of the evening has already happened – your chance to tour our award winning building, meet our students and talk to our teachers. We continue to run daytime tours every Tuesday and Thursday at 9.00am and 10.00am until October half term.

After eleven years as Head here (making me the longest serving Secondary Headteacher of a mainstream school in Hackney), probably the highlight was A Level results day last summer. Our students achieved record results and all could go to the University of their choice. They have now headed to all parts of the country – Bristol, York, Manchester, Warwick and top London Universities. Many are the first members of their family to attend University.

Our mission statement is Believe and Achieve – we believe your children can be successful here and, working in partnership, we can achieve the very best for them.

We are graded Outstanding by Ofsted for Behaviour and Safety, and, Leadership and Management (and Good overall as a school). Ofsted visited as recently as March 2017. We have high standards of behaviour but we also want to ‘catch’ the children doing well. We have a positive atmosphere around the school which is not about chanting mantras or walking the corridors in silence. We are not a ‘Boot Camp Academy’ which means parents in Hackney have a real choice between different types of schools all of which are graded Good and Outstanding by Ofsted.

We are a Christian School but not a School just for Christians. Our students and staff are of every faith and no faith. We do aim to teach right from wrong and values which are shared by different religions. Christopher Urswick founded free education in Hackney in 1520, when he was Rector of Hackney. The first school was where the Narrow Way is on Mare Street at the site now used by a Bookmaker. The School has grown over nearly 500 years and will be offering 180 places in Year 7 in 2019, up from 150 previously. A new building where the staff car park currently is will help us to expand and construction starts in 2019.

Tonight you will have seen and heard Mandarin and Spanish being spoken by students, the school song being performed, our Library (open to Year 7 until 4.00pm), experiments in Science, our ICT provision and much, much more. Hopefully you have enjoyed the evening and decided this is a school right for your child. We look forward to working with you.

Believe and Achieve

Richard Brown

Executive Headteacher
