Annual Mandarin Speaking Competition

Matai, Year 8, represented The Urswick School by taking part in the British Council’s annual Mandarin Speaking Competition.

The Competition allows pupils to show off the hard word and effort they have put into learning Mandarin Chinese one of the languages that matters most to the UK's future prosperity. This year pupils from 88 secondary schools across the UK competed in regional heats in Belfast, Glasgow and London.

Matai competed in the Individual Language Ability section. He had to give a short presentation in Mandarin, answer 3 questions from the judging panel and translate sentences from English to Mandarin on the spot.

Matai said: "Participating in the competition has increased my confidence, and I am happy to have the opportunity to use my Mandarin skills outside a classroom setting"

We are very proud of Matai, and wish him the best of luck to go to the final heat of the competition!
