    Mr Brown's first blog post!

Welcome to the first of a series of weekly blog posts which I hope will help keep students, parents, staff and the Hackney community aware of events at The Urswick School.

Aside from some minor works, the new building is completely finished and ready for the start of an exciting new year. The Sports Centre is spectacular and admired by everyone who sees it.

Together with new kitchens and dining area, we have engaged a new catering contractor, Harrison, who successfully deliver good quality food in a number of London schools. Having seen the menus that will be on offer, I expect the quality of food to be much higher in future. The school has introduced Cashless Catering from September. This means students cannot pay for their lunches or break time snacks at the till but need to regularly top up their cards before school, at break or lunchtime.

The Class of 2011 have again achieved record breaking GCSE results. 45% passed five or more GCSEs, including English and Maths (up 4% on last year). 77% achieved five or more GCSEs - this is a fantastic 21% increase on the previous year. In total, students achieved 88 A* grades and 135 A grades at GCSE - again, both new school records. In addition to these successes, I am excited about what the first generation of students at The Urswick School can achieve. Ms Rzymek's year group have already taken GCSE modules in many subjects including Maths, Science, RE and Community Languages.

Mr Massimino's year group have successfully completed their BTEC in PE. All of this points to a really exciting and successful year ahead. I look forward to welcoming Year 7 to the school at 8.30am on Wednesday 7th September, Year 11 on Thursday 8th September and the remainder of the school on Friday 9th September.

    Best wishes,

    Richard
