Happy New Year from The Urswick School

Can I begin by wishing students, staff, parents, governors and friends of The Urswick School a very happy and peaceful new year.

As we return to school in 2012 we do so to a completely finished school site. All external works including new Astroturf and Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) have been completed. Our £17 million rebuild is now complete and the facilities at our school rival any in Hackney or indeed the country as a whole.
Despite all of the new space and facilities we have no plan to expand our year groups in years 7 to 11 beyond a maximum of 150 students. Parents who send their children to The Urswick School will do so knowing that we are the smallest mixed secondary school in Hackney. We value the excellent relationships between staff and students which are created within  a small school environment . Many other local schools and academies are double the size of The Urswick School. In one respect we will expand the School from September 2012 – by adding a Sixth Form offering a range of ‘A’ levels and other courses. I am delighted that the current year 11 will be the first to have the opportunity to join the Sixth Form Academy of The Urswick School. Research shows that students do best in an environment  where they feel safe, secure and established. Our teachers are also best placed to meet the learning needs of students as they progress from GCSE to ‘A’ level studies. Many of our staff, myself included, have experience of teaching ‘A’ level classes at other schools. We are already excitedly planning for our first Sixth Form cohort in 2012.
If you have any further queries about our Sixth Form please contact Marion Budd, Deputy Headteacher, at the School.
    With best wishes for 2012.
