• Sixth Form Art

Art, Craft & Design

Course: AS and A2

The course begins with an exploration of the theme ‘The City’. Students will consider what cities are, how they are defined, what kinds of things take place in them, and will start to think about the different ways they connect with London as individuals. The programme at sixth form is designed to encourage candidates to develop their interest and enjoyment in Art. Students will be encouraged to develop personal responses to ideas, observations, experiences, environments and cultures, drawing on their own strengths and pursuing their personal interests.

Students are able to explore their artistic practice in far greater depth than at GCSE, and are introduced to a wide variety of Art experiences, using a range of media, processes and techniques. Ceramics is a particular strength of the A Level course, and students will be given the opportunity to use clay in far more complex, creative and ambitious ways than at GCSE. They will also learn about glazes, gaining an understanding of the firing process and the different glaze effects they can achieve. Students will also gain a far more comprehensive understanding of digital media; we explore a range of programmes including PhotoShop, Illustrator, SketchUp and have a state-of-the-art DSLR to capture our digital images.

By the end of the course students will be well placed to enrol on an Art and Design course at University, although many other routes will be open, such as Computer Game Design, Special Effects, Digital Modelling, Animation as well as a vast array of other areas which require creative thought.
