Students in Year 10 and Year 12 were honoured to take part in the Confirmation of the Election of
the new Archbishop of Canterbury, The Right Reverend and Right Honourable Dame Sarah Mullally,
in a historic service held at St Paul’s Cathedral on 28 th January. Archbishop Sarah is the first female to
hold the role in its 1,400 year history.

Dame Sarah entered St Paul’s as the Bishop of London and left as the 106 th Archbishop of Canterbury
and now leads the Anglican Church. The service was partly religious but also legal. There was a
lengthy swearing in process. Sarah wanted the service to include a reading of the New Testament in
both Portuguese and English to emphasise the companion links of the London Diocese with
Churches in Angola and Mozambique. Leslie and Camila were word perfect as they read before a
congregation of about two thousand people.

After the Confirmation of Election and the welcome by Diocesan Bishops, the first non-clergy to
address the Archbishop were our students in Year 10, Paolo, Jerson and Afreen. Paolo had previously
been confirmed by Sarah when she was Bishop of London. Any nerves were kept at bay and our
students spoke perfectly supported by School Chaplain Mr Aubrey and Headteacher Mr Rotimi.
In December 2017, Urswick was the first school Bishop Sarah visited on the day her appointment as
the first female Bishop of London was announced. She really connected with school and
subsequently invited a group of Sixth Form students to visit Parliament and witness her introduction
as a member of the House of Lords. It was a wonderful surprise that she remembered Urswick again
and invited us to be the only secondary school to participate in this historic occasion.

We wish Archbishop Sarah well in her Ministry and are sure she will Believe and Achieve.
