A trip to Cambridge University

A  group of Year 12s and Year 11s had the amazing opportunity to visit one of the 31 colleges at the University of Cambridge.

Upon arrival, students were met by the college’s Head of Admissions and Urswick alumni Miriam Summers who studies Chinese at the university. The visit began with a tour, where students were shown around the college’s main buildings and facilities such as the great hall, library and sports centre. During the tour, students were able to learn more about university life and were even given the opportunity to look at some typical student accommodation.

A highlight of the morning was getting the chance to meet and talk with the principal of the college who took his time to deliver an inspiring speech where he encouraged students to be the driver of their own success, even when facing difficulties. One year 12 was even challenged to a game of table tennis!

After a delicious lunch in the college canteen, the Head of Admissions hosted a Q&A style talk about applying to Oxbridge and other top universities, providing students with useful information about the application process, what to include in personal statements and how to choose the right subject to study as a degree. Towards the end of the talk, there was also the chance to take part in a variety of puzzles and games where students could practice thinking analytically and under pressure.

Overall, the trip was a brilliant opportunity for students to gain insight into what the University of Cambridge is like as a place to study and live as well as learn more about how to apply to top universities.
